A Nigerian clergywoman is trending online following a viral sermon in which she addressed a fast-emerging trend of parents pressuring their first-born daughters to take on financial responsibilities for their siblings, often at the cost of their own well-being.
In the emotionally charged video, the pastor condemned what she described as “parental grooming into prostitution” under the guise of family duty.
“Your siblings are not your responsibility. You only help if you have. If you do not have, relax,” she stated. Speaking of the cases of young women who have to train many siblings from small wages, she warned that such demand is unfair and risky.
“How are they managing to have eight children and not raise even a single one, but the first daughter should suffer? Are they okay?” she asked.
She also criticized fathers who abandon their duties, but instead push their daughters into marriage for financial gain. “There are girls dying in violent marriages while mothers tell them, ‘Don’t come out ooo… he is paying us money monthly.’
The sermon has caused widespread controversy on gender roles, parent expectations, and the psychological burden of imposed responsibility among female youths in Nigeria.
