Nigeria’s electricity system has collapsed once more, cutting power to most of the country on Wednesday morning and leaving millions without electricity.
The crash was dramatic – in just one hour, from 11 a.m. to noon, the country’s power generation plummeted from nearly 3,000 megawatts to a measly 1.5 megawatts. That’s essentially nothing for a country of over 200 million people.
The Nigeria National Grid quickly acknowledged the problem on social media, simply saying “System restoration is in progress.”
They later confirmed that almost every power distribution company across the country had their electricity allocation cut to zero. Only Ibadan managed to keep some power flowing.
Officials haven’t said what caused this latest collapse, which is becoming an all-too-familiar story for Nigerians.
The national grid has a frustrating habit of failing regularly, leaving businesses struggling to operate and families dealing with yet another day without reliable electricity.
As always, authorities say they’re working to restore power, but Nigerians have heard this promise countless times before.
