More than 280,000 Canadians have signed a petition urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strip Elon Musk of his Canadian citizenship, accusing him of acting against Canada’s national interests. The parliamentary petition, launched on February 20, alleges that Musk, now a key figure in Donald Trump’s administration, has become part of a foreign government attempting to undermine Canadian sovereignty. It also accuses the billionaire of interfering in Canadian elections and using his influence against the country’s interests.
Musk, who holds South African, U.S., and Canadian passports, has drawn criticism for his close ties with Trump, particularly regarding trade policies that threaten Canada. Trump has proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, potentially disrupting the long-standing North American free trade agreement.
Adding to the controversy, both Trump and Musk have made provocative statements suggesting that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. Musk even referred to Trudeau as “Canada’s governor” and responded to the petition by claiming on X that “Canada is not a real country.” The petition reflects growing tensions over Musk’s political influence and his alignment with U.S. policies that could harm Canada’s economy and sovereignty.
