Social media commentator Reno Omokri has gone after Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, over his stance on making Mathematics compulsory for Art students seeking university admission.
Omokri blasted Obi for opposing the government’s plan to remove Mathematics as a mandatory requirement, claiming Obi himself didn’t have the credentials to make such demands.
In a post on X, Omokri didn’t hold back: “See someone who did not get a credit in Mathematics insisting that Nigerian Art students must pass Mathematics during WAEC before they can gain admission into a university.
That means Peter Obi should return his certificate to UNN. By his own admission, he did not merit his admission.”
Omokri then contrasted Obi’s position with President Bola Tinubu’s policies, arguing that Tinubu is making education more accessible while Obi wants to create barriers.
“President Tinubu is giving you student loans to facilitate your university dreams, while Obi is placing roadblocks in your way. If you are an Art student, vote for Peter Obi at your own risk!” he wrote.
Peter Obi had criticized the Federal Government’s reported plan to drop Mathematics as a compulsory admission requirement.
In a statement titled “Back and Forth Policy on Mathematics: A Costly Mistake,” he called the move “a regrettable step backwards” for Nigeria’s education system.
While the Federal Ministry of Education later clarified that Mathematics would remain mandatory at the secondary level, Obi argued that removing it from tertiary admission requirements would “change nothing fundamentally” and still harm educational standards.
The back-and-forth highlights the ongoing debate about educational requirements in Nigeria, with politicians now using the Mathematics controversy to score political points against each other.
