UI Medical Students Protest Power Outage as Minister Visits UCH

Medical students of the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a protest on Monday over the persistent power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, calling on the Federal Government to provide a lasting solution to the crisis. The demonstration coincided with the visit of the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who was at the hospital to discuss solutions to the ongoing electricity challenges with UCH management.

Carrying placards with messages such as “100+ Days of Darkness: Save UCH,” “Medical School Is Hard Enough Give Us Light,” and “This Is Not How We Want to Live,” the students expressed frustration over the impact of the blackout on their studies and living conditions.

UCH has faced repeated power disconnections by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over unpaid debts, with major outages recorded in March and October 2024. The most recent disconnection, on October 26, 2024, has left the hospital without electricity for weeks, sparking Monday’s protest.

During his visit, Minister Adelabu held talks with hospital management and key stakeholders to explore possible solutions to the crisis. However, as of the time of filing this report, details of the meeting have not been made public.
