The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has debunked the news reports that former President Goodluck Jonathan is going to return to the presidential race for the 2027 general polls, declaring that no such plan was made public to him.
In his remarks at a media parley with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Wike described the report as mere rumour, adding that Jonathan never consulted him on any political return.
“You’re the one telling me here. Jonathan has never told me; he has never called me one day to say, ‘I’m being pressured to run, what’s your thinking?’ If he calls me and asks, I’ll tell him my mind,” Wike stated.
He blamed sections of the media for selling unverified reports, and he added: “I am not going to believe something is true because it finds its way on the pages of newspapers just like they used to report that I was evacuated out of the country.”
Discussing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership issues, Wike also disowned former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as consensus candidate for National Chairman role.
“I don’t know if Tanimu Turaki would be chairman; maybe he is a chairman to some other group, not the PDP I know,” he stated.
The minister questioned the legality of PDP’s scheduled national convention holding on November 15–16 in Ibadan, wondering if he would attend.
“How do you want me to appear at a convention that, according to law, does not exist?” Wike questioned.
