Rivers State Governor prior to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, said Governor Siminalayi Fubara would warrant impeachment if proven guilty of committing any infraction. Impeachment, for him, is a common political process and not a crime.
“Politics is not a game. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence,” Wike declared in a live media chat on Wednesday.
Wike also took a swipe at the ongoing legislative crisis in Rivers State, that is, the legitimacy of pro-Fubara lawmakers. Indirectly referring to the three pro-Fubara lawmakers, he questioned the legality of a minority legislating for the state.
“I never imagined that in this nation, at this point, Nigerians will be deliberating where to sit three members of the House of Representatives in order to make a law and are deliberating about taking it to the Supreme Court. Do we need to go to work?” he declared.
The political fight in Rivers intensified following the Supreme Court, favoring 27 Wike supporters elected lawmakers, dismissing October 2024 local government elections in what became a null. Prizing people who rose against what he described as “illegality,” Wike reiterated that elected representatives never deserve to be treated like junior officers.
“Servers and members of the Assembly are not my children; they were elected; they are not your boys and your girls. You sit and play with them.
I accompanied my Speakers, and I formed relationships. It’s not master-servant,” he told journalists. Wike also recalled an incident in which elder statesman Ferdinand Alabararba had supported the assumption of office by an Ijaw governor.
He was appalled that Alabararba was later “disrespected” by individuals he had helped. “This veteran wept; he almost wept. This boy later on insulted this veteran; now he cannot go back to him for help. On a normal occasion, these are the people who will refer the family people. Forget about me,” Wike added.
