Abia Governor Increases NYSC Allowance from ₦4,000 to ₦50,000 After 27 Years

Governor Alex Otti

For the first time in nearly three decades, corps members serving in Abia State will finally see a significant boost in their monthly allowances, thanks to Governor Alex Otti’s new payment structure.

The governor has approved a dramatic increase that raises the base allowance from a mere ₦4,000 to ₦20,000 for all NYSC members in the state.

But it gets better, depending on where you’re posted, you could earn up to ₦50,000 monthly.

According to Chief Press Secretary Njoku Ukoha, here’s how the new structure breaks down:

Base allowance: ₦20,000 for all corps members

Government office workers: Additional ₦10,000 (total: ₦30,000)

Teachers and medical staff: Additional ₦30,000 (total: ₦50,000)

This state allowance comes on top of the Federal Government’s ₦77,000 NYSC stipend, meaning corps members in teaching or healthcare roles could pocket around ₦127,000 monthly, a life-changing difference from what previous batches received.

“This is the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to youth development and capacity building in Abia,” Ukoha announced on Friday.

The allowance increase is part of a larger plan to make service year more meaningful in Abia.

The government has been quietly upgrading the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area with better roads, reliable electricity, and improved facilities.

Governor Otti’s philosophy? Every facility in Abia deserves attention, whether it’s state or federally owned, because at the end of the day, it benefits the people.

The administration has also rolled out the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for state health workers and extended it to local government staff, ensuring everyone gets paid according to federal standards.

Right now, about 35% of Abia’s budget goes to healthcare and education, two areas the government sees as crucial for building a stronger workforce and better institutions.
