A cholera outbreak in Adamawa State has claimed at least 10 lives, with health officials working urgently to contain the disease.

Dr. Felix Tangwami, Adamawa’s Commissioner for Health, confirmed the deaths on Wednesday, November 5th, explaining that all the victims died at home without seeking medical help.

According to Linda Ikeji Blog, the outbreak is centered in the Mubi Local Government Area, where the state government and World Health Organisation have mobilized emergency response teams.

“From the beginning, we have been on top of the situation. Our presence has been there, and this cannot be denied,” Dr. Tangwami said during a briefing in Yola.

He stressed that people who went to hospitals received immediate treatment and are recovering.

As of Tuesday, November 4th, 25 patients were being treated in medical facilities, while others have already been discharged after receiving care and hygiene education.

The state has deployed its epidemiologist, the Director of Disease Control from the Primary Health Care Development Agency, and teams of volunteers to Mubi.

They’re providing medical services, tracking cases in communities, and educating residents about prevention.

Dr. Tangwami called on residents to prioritize hygiene and urged traditional leaders to encourage people to seek treatment at the first sign of symptoms.

“We can only stop the spread if everyone works together, by staying clean, drinking safe water, and reporting to health centres early,” he said.

Cholera spreads through contaminated water and food, causing severe diarrhea and dehydration that can be fatal without prompt treatment.
