El-Rufai Dumps APC for SDP, Calls for United Opposition Ahead of 2027

Former Governor of Kaduna State and one of the founding fathers of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling party and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In a statement on Monday, El-Rufai cited deep dissatisfaction with the APC’s trajectory over the past two years, accusing the party’s leadership of failing to address its internal challenges. He revealed that his concerns raised both privately and publicly had gone unheeded, leading him to seek an alternative platform aligned with his progressive ideals.

El-Rufai, a one-time Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), explained that his exit was a pragmatic decision, as the APC had lost sight of the vision of the people who established the party.

“I have labored hard for the APC and assisted the party in its electoral successes in 2015, 2019, and 2023. But the party has weakened its organs and treated its members with scorn. I can no longer accept this,” he stated.

Announcing his allegiance to the SDP, El-Rufai reiterated his intention to consolidate opposition forces into a common front to confront the APC in future polls. El-Rufai invited his followers and Nigerians interested in the future of the country to follow him into the SDP, which he touted as the vehicle for genuine change before 2027.
