FG Clarifies: No Scrapping of JSS and SSS, Just a Proposal for Reform

Tinubu

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports claiming that the government has scrapped the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure in favor of a new 12-year uninterrupted basic education model. In a statement on Friday, the ministry’s Director of Press, Folashade Boriowo, clarified that the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, only presented a proposal for discussion at the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Boriowo emphasized that the proposal does not mean an immediate policy shift. Instead, it suggests a transition to 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the current 6-3-3 system.

“The proposal seeks to eliminate barriers between JSS and SSS, allowing for a seamless transition of students without the hurdles of external assessments at that stage.

However, this is still under consultation and deliberation,” the statement read. The ministry assured that extensive discussions with stakeholders will take place before any decision is made. The final verdict on the proposed reform will be determined at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025.

“The public is urged to disregard false claims that JSS and SSS have been scrapped,” the statement added.

“The Federal Government remains committed to policies that enhance access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.”
