Former First Lady Michelle Obama has addressed widespread rumors of an impending divorce from her husband, former President Barack Obama, after she did not show up to recent high-profile events.
Rumors were at a peak when Michelle did not accompany Barack to former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral. The rumors intensified after she announced she would not attend former President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
Speaking candidly on Work in Progress, a podcast run by actress Sophia Bush, Michelle confronted the rumors head-on. She clarified that her break was simply a personal decision — not a sign of marriage issues. The shocker is that, when I say ‘no,’ most individuals are like, ‘I understand, and I’m okay,’ ” Michelle stated.
“But this year, individuals couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself — they had to think my husband and I were divorcing.”
She drew attention to the broader issue of how women’s choices are often examined or misconstrued, especially if they are not in line with societal expectations. This couldn’t just be a grown woman making a succession of decisions for herself, could it?” she went on. “But that’s what society does to us. We start finally going, ‘What am I doing?
Who am I doing this for?’ And if it won’t fit into the stereotype of what people think we should be doing, then it is labeled as something terrible and negative.”.
