The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has praised the swift release of two journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, Plateau State, who were detained while covering the funeral of the late mother of All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe.
The journalists were arrested after they shared on social media a video capturing a confrontation between a clergyman and security operatives at the burial, which President Bola Tinubu and other top government functionaries attended. The two arrests stirred an outrage among journalists and media practitioners, who viewed it as an attack on freedom of the press and a violation of the freedom of journalists to report.
In a statement, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, for his prompt intervention to secure the release of the journalists. According to Abdullahi, Ajayi not only ordered that they be released forthwith but also personally apologized to the NUJ and directed DSS operatives to be careful and make proper investigations before making arrests.
This is a commendable and refreshing turn in the culture of our security agencies,” Abdullahi said. “The willingness of the leadership of the DSS to take responsibility for errors, apologise, and commit to reforms is a great step towards public trust and confidence building in the agency.
The NUJ president urged the DSS to sustain this line of action and continue to have respect for the rights of citizens and journalists. “Press freedom is the cornerstone of democracy. Journalists must never be treated like enemies for doing their constitutional duty,” he added.
While praising the DSS for its responsiveness, Abdullahi also called for institutional accountability by imposing appropriate sanctions on officers who act beneath democratic norms.
He recommitted the NUJ to constructive engagement with security agencies for the purpose of encouraging professionalism, respect, and protection of national security and freedom of the press.
The statement also called on journalists across the country to remain courageous, vigilant, and professional in the execution of reporting duties.
