As part of activities marking his first year in office, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted clemency to 43 convicts, following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN.
According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the gesture reflects Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to reformative justice and humane governance. The governor ordered the outright release of eight individuals, commuted the death sentences of 15 condemned inmates to various prison terms, and reduced the life sentences of 20 other convicts to more lenient terms.
“This decision shows Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and rehabilitation,” the statement noted, adding that the move aligns with efforts to reform the penal system and reintegrate former inmates into society as productive citizens.
