Police Academy, PSC Clash Again Over Admission Process for 12th Regular Course

In yet another episode of their longstanding feud, the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were in conflict regarding the ongoing admission exercise into the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, for the 12th Regular Course Degree programmes.

The controversy was renewed following a disclaimer by PSC chairman Ikechukwu Ani on Thursday, July 31, 2025. The commission discredited the advertised admission process by the Academy as a breach of due procedure and an insult to the PSC’s constitutionally mandated role of oversight.

The PSC claims the exercise circumvents its single mandate to appoint people into the Nigeria Police Force — a mandate the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court had sustained. It warned parents, guardians, and prospective applicants to disregard the Academy’s claim until formal guidelines issue from the commission.

In a swift response, however, the Nigeria Police Academy, through the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, maintained that the process of admission is still in effect. In a release by Bolaji Kazeem, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Ministry, it labeled the PSC’s argument as “baseless and misleading.”.

We wish to categorically state that the advert for admission into the 12th Regular Course Degree Programmes of the Nigeria Police Academy took effect,” the statement insisted.

It further asserted that the PSC has no constitutional jurisdiction over the university admission, insisting that the Academy’s process is in line with the regulations of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Ministry of Police Affairs.

“All potential applicants and members of the public are requested to ignore the above disclaimer. The online application portal remains open as earlier advertised,” Kazeem said.

This schism is merely another chapter in the long fight between the PSC and the NPF on recruitment, appointment, and admission into police institutions  a fight that has lasted for decades without permanent resolution.
