CAF

A historic increase in prize money for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has been announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with a total of $10.4 million set to be distributed among participating teams. For the first time since the tournament’s inception, a prize of $3.5 million will be awarded to the champions, marking a 75 percent rise from the $2 million received by the winners of the previous edition.

The second-place team will be awarded $1.2 million, while the third- and fourth-place finishers will earn $700,000 and $600,000, respectively. Each of the four quarter-finalists eliminated in that round will be granted $450,000. Teams that finish third or fourth in their respective groups will be allocated either $300,000 or $200,000, depending on the structure of the group. Meanwhile, bottom-placed teams in five-team groups will each receive $200,000.

Prize allocations have been structured to ensure that all 19 participating teams benefit, with the aim of encouraging participation and rewarding performance at all stages of the tournament. CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe emphasized the federation’s commitment to the growth of African football, stating that the increased prize money reflects ongoing investment in the sport across the continent.

“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement issued by CAF.

He further noted that the tournament continues to be “a key part of our strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global broadcasters.”

The 2024 edition of CHAN, officially named the CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, will be jointly hosted by the three East African nations. Scheduled to take place from August 2 to 30, 2025, the tournament will feature 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal, former champions Morocco and DR Congo, as well as strong contenders such as Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.
