Tiger Woods Withdraws from Genesis Invitational, Cites Mother’s Passing

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week’s Genesis Invitational, revealing that he is still grieving the loss of his mother, Kultida, and is not yet ready to return to competitive golf. Kultida’s passing was confirmed on February 4. Just three days later, organizers of the Genesis Invitational announced that Woods would participate in the tournament at Torrey Pines. However, the 15-time major champion has since decided to step back, citing his emotional state.

In a statement shared on social media, Woods wrote:

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.

“Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom’s passing.”

Woods has not competed in a PGA Tour event since last year’s Open at Royal Troon in July. His participation in tournaments has been limited since a serious car accident in February 2021, which left him with significant injuries. He underwent additional surgery on his lower back in September 2023, further delaying his return to the sport.
