Tinubu Foresaw U.S. Diplomatic Tension, Acted Proactively — Presidency

The Presidency explained that President Bola Tinubu had anticipated the recent diplomatic tension with the United States occasioned by Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern,” CPC, over alleged persecution of Christians, and had already taken proactive steps to address emerging security and diplomatic challenges.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga said that Tinubu’s recent shake-up of the military hierarchy, coupled with stern instructions to new service chiefs, showed his foresightedness in preparing for the unfolding situation.

Onanuga’s explanation came amidst remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump that suggested Washington could take “direct action” against countries accused of religious persecution, only a day after Nigeria’s CPC listing.

In a post on X, Onanuga wrote: “President Bola Tinubu was well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America as he told the new service chiefs on Thursday what Nigerians expect of them. No more excuses Nigerians want results.”

He recalled the warning given by Tinubu during the decoration ceremony of the service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, where the President warned of the emergence of new armed groups and directed decisive action against emerging threats in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South.

“The President’s directive to crush these threats before they escalate underscores his determination to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability against both internal and external pressures,” Onanuga said.
