Legend Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha debunked speculations of him contesting the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The rumor followed Nigeria’s lackluster 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification games, which sparked calls for the removal of the Ibrahim Gusau board at the NFF. Gossip immediately made rounds that Okocha was poised to occupy the federation’s top seat.
But the 1994 AFCON champion denied the rumors, describing them as false and misleading.
“Hi, everybody, I would just like to take a moment to tell you that the news and messages circulating are false,” Okocha clarified. “I have not said or told anyone anything regarding Nigerian football or wanting to be NFF president. I am here in Kigali for SPORTSBIZAFRICA.”
The former PSG and Bolton player also urged those spreading the rumors to desist, and requested Nigerians not to give up hope despite the travail of the team.
“I know that we’re frustrated where we’re at right now, but be assured that better days are ahead. Let’s just keep believing. It doesn’t come easy, but we’re all in this together. God bless and please let’s stay strong,” he further added.
The Super Eagles have an uphill task to make it to the World Cup ahead. Nigeria has only two games remaining with 11 points, six behind Group C leaders South Africa. They are back in action next month against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
